So you are in the pressure washer business and you want to clean the local docks at the Marina. Good plan, let us give you a little advice on this. First you have to sell the account. Explain to the marina manager or the dock master or municipal purchasing agent that their clientele and/or citizens will be very impressed to see that this normally much neglected area of the marina and/or pier is being taken care of and cleaned. It's going to make it much more presentable. The clientele will be happier, therefore will be more likely to keep their moorage in storage there and be happy-paying customers for long into the future. Explain to the dock master or marina manager also that it can be a safety issue. The cleaner and less slippery their docks are the better and safer it's going to be for their clientele. This is also a good selling point. This is an easier sell to government agencies since everyone wants to stay away from lawsuits.

When doing areas that are consistently shaded, or in dark recessed areas, make sure that you remove the excess water to avoid the growth of algae. If you are doing anything inside a building that's over water or anything similar to this, make sure that you remove as much water as possible. You may also want to, in certain situations where their docks warrant it, use a staining product to re-stain the docks to keep them up since a lot of them get weathered and they are consistently exposed to sunlight and harsh salt air and water. For the best products on wood we recommend Lifeguard Water Proofing Products which are guaranteed for five to seven years depending on which grade you buy. You can purchase them at Eagle Hardware, in Canada at Depots.

Other products we recommend are Behr Products, which are the second best and can be found at Home Depots around the country. If they ask you for a wet look go buy a product called Sikkens and this is also available at Home Depot.

If you do any re-staining on decking, be extremely careful not to let the stain material drop into the water as it can sometimes drift and attach itself onto the gel coat of other boats right at their water line. Although it can create some work for you, there will be some unhappy boaters and they will know directly who to go to if you do not work carefully. So, just be cautious, since most stains are lighter than water and they float until they wash up against something, such as a boat hull.

Wood Discoloration Factors and Procedures for Dock Cleaning

There are many types of stains, which can get on a dock at the Marina, if you do not have a pressure washer or steam cleaner and you need to clean these stains you may wish to know how to clean them without expensive equipment. If you have the proper equipment but a stubborn stain, you might want to use these procedures to increase your success.

Algae: Use a diluted bleach* solution (4:1). Saturate algae growth and allow to sit five to ten minutes. Scrub and rinse well.

Extractive/Tannin Bleed: Use a four to five percent solution of oxalic acid. Allow solution to remain on spot until the darkness disappears, then rinse well with water.

Grease: Use a strong household detergent in warm water and agitate with a brush. Automotive degreaser has also shown to be effective when used according to directions.

Mildew: Use a diluted bleach* solution and scrub.

Mill Stamps: There are no solvents available to remove these stamps. Sanding is the most effective means. They will also fade with time.

Leaf Stains: Use a diluted bleach* solution and scrub.

Pitch/Rosin: Scrape the excess material from wood using a putty knife or steel wool and clean the area with hot, soapy water. Turpentine is effective in removing pitch, which is still sappy.

Rosin from surrounding trees: Wipe area with a wet cloth with turpentine.

*Sometimes when cleaning wood with a stain, especially with bleach, the natural color of the wood may disappear. Check with your distributor/supplier for products than can be used to ensure uniformity and restore the wood to its natural color.

Wolmans, Behr, Sikkens, Lifeguard and others have company websites with all this type of information and more. You would be wise to understand these procedures to insure a perfect job. Do it right, do it efficient. Think about it.

What's in a Name?

Everything.

What do you do with all the contacts you make in your organisation? Do you:

Collect business cards and throw them in the bottom of your desk drawer hoping one day one of these people will ring and do business with you? Have any system for keeping information on your clients and prospects? Do you enter all their details into your database so that you can communicate with them in the future?

Do you enter all your clients into the database with information about what they've bought from you and conversations you've had with them? I'm astounded that so many business people keep no comprehensive records of their clients, general contacts and prospects.

Your database is a goldmine. It is the most important item in your business.

A great system will be able to do the following:

Generate a letter, fax or email directly from the program to the contact.

Record all contact details and any communication you have had with that person including phone conversations, meetings, emails, promotional information, and sales made.

Be able to select any particular group of people, ie. everyone in a specific area, all your "A" clients, prospects, strategic alliances. A reminder system for follow-ups.

Which Database Is Right For You?

Well, that depends on your organisation. Now there are various databases, eg Microsoft's Access and Lotus' Approach. However specific contact management software can offer far more features, including a "hotlist" to remind you when to follow up. These applications include:

Maximizer

I personally know very successful businesses that use ACT and Maximizer. At The Office Organiser we use Maximizer which we find very good.

Speak with successful people in your field and ask them what they use.

You may find that there are specific databases that have been designed

for your industry.

The key when choosing one of these systems is to have a look at their functions and get someone who knows all about the software to set it up and train you in its use.

also delegate/outsource the task of the initial keying in of data to another team member in your organisation or even a secretarial service or temp.

A special note for Salespeople

If you are an employee and your organisation has no database, I suggest you invest in one. It will be the wisest business investment you can make.

Most salespeople promise everything and unfortunately do not deliver. They rush from one appointment to another and forget to follow through on their promises.

If they had some way of keeping in touch with clients and prospects via using their database as an effective marketing and follow up tool, they would increase their sales dramatically.

All businesses that grant credit will be faced with the problem of bad debt at some stage. The best way to deal with bad debt is to have a good debt control system in place.

There are three types of bad debt:

Can pay.
This is where your debtor can pay but will drag out non-payment as long as possible. They do intend to pay but only at the last moment.
Can't pay.
This type of debtor have no means of paying the debt either momentarily or ever. They are not necessarily avoiding payment but do not have the means to do so.
Won't pay.
This type of debtor is the worst. They will try to get away with not paying, know the debt collection routine and will not pay until the matter goes either to court or through a debt collection agency.

The solution to this is to get your money when it falls due or have a collection procedure that does not let your debtors get away with anything. Once you stop chasing the money that is due to you the amount owing to you will increase. The longer you allow a debt to remain unpaid, the less chance you have of recovering it.

There are three ways to collect debt:

By yourself.
This is the least costly method and involves phoning the debtor, sending letters and as a last resort, going to court to have the debt paid.
By a lawyer.

Let them know with confidence that with all you know about them at this point you feel your company is a great match for them and it would be worth it to take a closer look.

ACTION time is again upon you. You must now give them the next step in the exploring process. Your company most likely has a process laid out for you whether it is to do a 3-way call with your upline, connect them to a live presentation, or simply send them to your website for more information.

Follow the K.A.R.M.A. presentation and you will be on your way to getting the positive results you desire when calling your leads.

Despite a growing body of new women's health research, the idea of equating women and men's health still persist.

Often we worry about our fresh water drinking quality due to pollution and contaminates. We know it is critical to have clean water in our civilization. We also know that it is important that our shorelines and oceans are clean, as it affects the eco-system, food chain and our local and regional sea life. We must worry about industry, sewer treatment plants, non-point source discharges to storm drains as well as the fertilizers, chemicals and debris which runs off into our water supplies and/or flows to the ocean.

We must pit these needs of our civilization against the environmental costs associated with them. We indeed cannot afford to make trades, which might cause dead zones of sea life or pollute our oceans. Luckily for us Mother Nature is quite resilient in handling mankind's pollution, however we must continuing monitor the types of pollution we allow and prevent 99.9% of it whenever we can.

In Industry oil and gas drilling rigs often take hits from Hurricane Storms and occasionally one is completely destroyed, causing an unfortunate release of chemicals, oil spill or other pollution. These rigs are coated with very high-tech coatings to prevent rust and corrosion from the constant salt spray of the never forgiving ocean. I propose using such coatings and adding in a coating which would turn color when water is contaminated. If an oilrig is tipped over or destroyed these coatings would mix with the water and release oil and gas-eating bacteria, which would attach to any spill and start feasting on it. Bio-remediation is a science, which has come very far very fast in the past decade.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina we find the mighty Lake Ponchartrain full of unnecessary crud and pollution. This is unfortunate indeed as the lake is a place for boaters, fishing and a fun lifestyle. The waters pumped back into the lake were polluted with e.Coli bacteria, chemicals and debris, which is going to be tough on the lakes eco-system. Lake Ponchartrain was making a strong comeback in the years prior to Hurricane Katrina, as nature always does find a way to clean itself and renew. The environment is proving to be quite resilient indeed. I would therefore like to propose that we coat the bridge over pass support structures with a special coating which will clean the lake as slow tide brushes up against it. Attracting the floating chemicals now present and then through bio-remediation rapidly break down those chemicals. We have modern coatings and environmental dispensers, which can do this.

I further propose that the support structures of the bridge contain spongy bio remediation pellets, which will be released each day when the streetlights on the bridge turn off. These pellets would be made of spongy material, which would not hurt the boat hulls of vessels, which might bump into them as they float. The spongy material would also be made very distasteful to birds, fish, sea life and wildlife; yet would clean the Lake. Timed released biological and environmental remediation is nothing new, many environmental engineers use this to help reduce large algae blooms which threaten drinking water supplies, affect water quality or are a danger to sea life. Once depleted the sponge would decay and become one with the lake.

If we consider our infrastructure which often crosses our important water ways, inlets, bays, rivers, lakes, wetlands and coastline; we may be able to coat these infrastructures with a coating which will alert us to any problematic contaminants, dispense bio-remediation solutions and protect our environment. I propose here and now that we work to develop a comprehensive strategy to accomplish this goal to put sensors, monitors and solutions on every piece of infrastructure that comes in contact with our water. Think on this.

Little is known of this person, but I shall tell you what is known of him. Underneath Moiromma's four hundred feet of ice is a dead planet, much like Earth's moon; similar to a big snowball in the heavens, might be a better description of Moiromma. But, as I was about to say, underneath this ball of ice and snow was at one time, seas and rivers beautify flows of water and flowers everywhere, now tunnels, caverns and sink holes. At one time this planet was alive and beautiful, one of the most stunning discs in the solar system, now but a fossil to its inhabitants. And like earth it had its disastrous times, its meteor bombardments, if you will; its volcanic disruptions; its tsunami crushing [title] waves. It was not all that long ago when all the ice age prevailed, took over the planet, soaked deep within the planets crust. At which time an earthquake took place causing a vertical displacement of thirty-five miles. It was the biggest quake the planet had ever seen. It tossed ice, land and living beings and creatures into its cold abyss.

The tsunamis waves traveled through the ice eight hundred miles an hour, giving no warning to the planets inhabitants, faster than any seismic wave they had ever endured. There is no such thing as a warning system on Moiromma, all fend for themselves one might say. They never knew what hit them, yet it happenes about every decade, not as big as the most recent one though.

This time the ice sheets blew open like a water spout flinging ice forty feet into the air, and all that was on it. Two thousand inhabitants died. This knocked the planet off its axis. The magnitude of the tremors kept everyone running for days on end.

Iazrak [or IK for short], the brother of Jokaneen, and friend of the old king of Moiromma, was a man of honor and valiant, in the name of bruthood on Moiromma; which of course is a virtue there. Unlike his peers, he had never died, not even once. He lived on an island of ice, on ice with a moat surrounding his small ice-fortress. In the evenings many of the villagers would come and visit IK with their families for a few hours, there he'd tell all the tales he had memorized from the comings and goings on of the many inhabitants of the planets known about within the solo systems, to include the old kings that once ruled the planet, and the great fight he once had with a foe. He was one of the peace makers you could say, but not quite involved with politics. He was more a seer, an odd kind of sort, and encouraged all to live a harmonious life. He talked about the wars before the ice came onto Moiromma, and how the old kings fought the Mountain Lords, the warriors of the olden days. He had said the planet had many trees at one time that gave the Lords much shelter from the Archking of Moir I, and his son King Moir II. And he mentioned the cobblestone streets and long summer days that was part of Moiromma at one time in the past. And all his listeners, some two-hundred from the villages nearby would listen night after night of his tales.

At times he'd even create great excitement with the stories, makeup what he had to, to entertain the people that is, add fiction to fact you could say; but some took a dubious intent to them, if not down right scorn; out of fear and hatred and ignorance, thus, they plotted his demise, his death, his assassination. There were three such zealots in the village that did this plotting.

It would seem they had a stranger walked through the village, IK was the mayor of sort, untitled, but the only spokesman they had, and when the inhabitants so asked him to be, to bestow his wisdom upon their deliberations, he would. This of course, also infuriated the plotting three, the evil doers, whom wanted to dominate the village for their own benefits.

Assassins, that is what they were, for their theme and plot could be seen no other way; hence, the day came around when the crime was imprinted in their brains to go ahead and commit to it. When one

looks at this picture, s/he must remember, the planet had only small, very small villages for the most part, since the king had died in battle and was shifted off to another planet, thus it was full of cell groups mostly, hunting groups, or as I had mentioned, tiny villages per se. The whole planet had only about 20,000-inhabidents to it. And the ones not living in the cell groups, or family packs, and some two or three families to a pack, lived hermit style, or on their own; you may ask why when city-states are more productive, and protective, and I have not the answer, it is just the way it was. Next, let us not forget the assassins, for they are over the horizon, getting their plans in order. With no discipline, there is no law, and with no law there are no limits, thus, the assassins felt: who can harm us? Sinister men of greet greed and lust or power control, and the little material wealth the village had to offer they wanted to use that power.

It came to pass, by way of a rumor that spread wildly throughout the village, Iazrak would meet his death should he remain in the village, and this got to his ears by way of the village folks. It really was meant to scare Iazrak out, without having to murder him, psychological warfare one might conclude. But this was not to take place, helpless the villagers were on Iazrak's behalf, he accepted only the good will of the people that should he remain in the village to be &careful.'

Jokaneen-begged her brother to stop his gatherings, hoping to stop the diabolical will of the assassins but the dimmable plotting against his life was to be carried out.

It would be fair to say, from that time on, no one really slept easily in the village, not as they had before; matter-of-fact, they slept so uneasy, a strange thing took place. One morning IK looked out his ice window to see the whole village deserted; there was only him and the three assassins left. Hence, this little nest of anarchy at the present had lost its control factor, its power-grid if you will; its life support, its reason for the kill to go on.

As time passed, the three found themselves bickering drinking rat alcohol, and ice-bug wine; the humdrum of life on Moiromma had returned-for the most part, back to how it was before [bleak and dreary], but without one's neighbors. The eyes of the three had lost their lust for life. It was shortly after this period when his sister talked him out of leaving, and joining a cell group, thus, retelling his stories, and adding one to it, the one you just heard. And to be honest, he was quite happy to be the storyteller.

Have you ever thought about how your orientation to time profoundly affects the way you are in the world? Each culture has its own unique way of relating to the concept of "time". Some cultures perceive time as a room that is lived in. The "room" of time is a constant that stays the same, as we change during the course of our lives. American culture seems to more and more think of time as a commodity there is never enough of. When time is "wasted" a person misses out on an opportunity that may never present itself again. Still other cultures experience time as being circular, without a beginning or an end, and with no clear markers as to past, present, and future. No matter how we think about it, our relationship to time has a profound impact on what we believe is possible. Here is a story to illustrate what I mean.

Years ago I belonged to a healing community in the States. A women who was a member of the group had an infant who was born with a serious condition which was meant to limit the young child's life span to only three or four years maximum. The woman was totally committed to the health and well being of her infant, and she spent every waking moment praying for her baby. Her prayer went something like this: "Dear Lord, please heal my baby and help him to be fully healthy." She offered up this prayer countless times a day.

After some months of praying, and with the child's condition not improving, the mother spontaneously had an important "truth" present itself to her. She realized that in praying for her child to be healed, in a deeper sense she was acknowledging the "fact" that indeed her child was not well at this time. In effect she was saying/praying "Lord, my child is currently ill, and I am asking that you heal him and make him healthy in the future." She realized that if she was praying a similar prayer for herself, it would be difficult for her to feel good about her chances of being healed if she was continually reminding herself that she was currently not healthy. She realized that even though her child was way too young to understand the words of her prayer, that somehow her words would not be fully supporting her child in feeling and being healthy now as well as in the future. With her new understanding of how her concept of time was deeply affecting her prayer, she revised her concept and began praying the following: "Lord thank you for the health and well being of my child. I am eternally grateful." Rather than praying for how she wanted her child to be different in the future, she prayed "from the future" and brought her prayer into the present. She prayed from an understanding that her child was "already" healthy, and that he was simply in a rebalancing stage that if allowed to run its course, would naturally bring about a continuation of his healthy state as time went on.

After many months of praying her new prayer the condition of her child slowly began to change. The doctors were surprised and confounded. Little by little the child blossomed into full health, like a flower that is awakened to life by the warm inviting rays of spring sunlight. He eventually entered school along with all of his buddies, and wound up being a shining example of the power of love, gratitude, and an empowering understanding of time.

Please give yourself the gift of believing that you are already everything that you always wanted to be. Breathe into this radical concept, and then simply allow and encourage yourself to grow into your new sense of self.

Have you ever walked into a store and things looked sloppy? Stores should have nice neat displays, right? Normally, yes, but sometimes they get a bit messy on busy days and we all understand how that can happen.

You'd probably think it wasn't very professional-looking. If a rack of shirts was haphazardly thrown together, with all the styles, colors and sizes mixed up, you'd probably walk right past it without giving it a second glance.

When we do business in the offline world we expect a professional appearance and professional manner from those who deal with customers. The same is true for online businesses.

Your business depends on how professional you are. Your website, your customer service and the appearance and quality of your work all reflect upon you, the business owner.

Recently I had problems submitting information to several websites. After trying for several days I finally e-mailed for technical support. (After all, the website owners had messages posted that said to contact them at any time.)

I didn't expect an immediate reply to my inquiries. I know they're busy running their businesses, and dealing with other people, too. But I have yet to receive any replies.

Where is the customer service? Why would I want to do business with someone who seems to be ignoring me? At the very least, if

it typically takes them more than a couple of days to reply to e-mail, support questions or other requests, they should post that information on their website so customers/visitors know what to expect.

Without good customer service, you're shooting yourself in the foot. Don't expect customers to buy from you if you can't afford them some common courtesy.

A professional appearance is mandatory to your business, also. How many times have you read an ad or article that had numerous spelling or grammatical errors?

We're not perfect. We all make mistakes. But if we frequently had those little red check marks on our composition papers in school, we should probably use spell check and have someone proof-read our copy before sending it into cyberspace.

A prime example is a website I visited a few months ago. As I started reading about the product the owner was selling I noticed an error with the use of the word "our." The site said "When you use "are" product....." OK, one little mistake. No big deal.

However, as I continued reading, I discovered the webmaster referred to "are" products and "are" website on the whole page! Not once was the correct word, "our," used.

Frequently I read ads and articles that contain many spelling or punctuation errors. For instance, "Thinking back to when I first started my business. I had no idea how or where to begin."

I'm not a teacher, but I can see that it should be one sentence, not two. The writer cut off the first sentence before actually finishing it. It's like the train of thought came to a screeching halt. (In this case, I'm the writer giving you an example. So if this sentence resembles someone else's work, it was not done intentionally.)

The correct way to write it is "Thinking back to when I first started my business, I had no idea how or where to begin." It's one flowing sentence. Now it tells you what I was thinking.

Another option is to change it just a bit to make it a complete sentence. "I think back to when I first started my business" or "I remember when I first started my business." Then continue to the second sentence.

I'm not wanting to demean anyone or be overly picky. Ads, web pages and articles just look much more professional when written with no errors, or at least very minor ones.

Many customers will shy away from a website or ad that seems poorly written or put together. The customer may see the business owner as an amateur, therefore their product, company or service may not be worth much.

Do your customers expect perfection? No. But they do expect professionalism. You're running a business, so you're supposed to be a professional. If you give a professional appearance, they'll believe in you and your business.

I love Major Millions. And realistically speaking, there's not really a "strategy" for playing any slot machine game.

But there are bankroll strategies that can keep you entertained and still give you an opportunity to win big playing the internet's biggest progressive jackpot game. That's what this page is about.

First of all, you have to understand that progressive jackpots, like lotteries, are longshots of epic proportions. You're not likely to win. Does that mean you shouldn't play though? I don't think it does at all. I think a frugal gambling approach to playing Major Millions would be similar to how a lot of people play the lottery: a little bit at a time, but consistently. Most of the people I know who play the lottery buy a ticket every time. And if the jackpot is higher, they'll buy more tickets. I think this is a good approach, and could easily be applied to our game of choice.

So here's my proposed strategy: I'm going to play Major Millions on a consistent basis. This means I'm going to play it daily, twice a week, weekly, or every payday. Doesn't matter what the timeframe is; all that matters is the consistency of play. But I'm not going to play big sessions, because I don't have a huge bankroll. But I am going to play the max bet every spin, because that's the only way to win the life-changing jackpot.

The next part of the strategy involves how many spins I'm going to take per session. And what I'm going to do is increase the number of spins I make based on the size of the jackpot, the idea being that the higher the jackpot, the better the payout percentage. (Although realistically speaking, I won't see a higher payout percentage because of a bigger jackpot unless I eventually win the jackpot.)

So here's the strategy. I'm going to bet $3 or $6 per session, because I don't have a lot of money. BUT if the jackpot is past a certain amount, I'm going to take additional spins based on the following schedule:

$250,000 - $499,999 - 1 $3 pull per session

$500,000 - $749,999 - 2 $3 pulls per session

$750,000 - $999,999 - 3 $3 pulls per sesssion

$1 million + - 4 $3 pulls per session

I'm not personally going to wager more than $12 per session on a progressive, because like I said, I have a small bankroll. And I'm probably going to be playing daily instead of weekly. If you have a smaller bankroll than I do, you might decide to only play weekly, and that's definitely an okay plan. And if you have a bigger bankroll than I do, you might be playing daily, but you might play more spins than I'm willing to at each level. But I think increasing your bets

Acclimating New Birds. 5 Things You NEED to Know About Your AOL 9.0 Subscribers.

Now that my services have expanded into the "matchmaking" business, it dawned on me that we need to talk about the transition of a bird moving to a new home, whether a hand fed baby just adopted to a new home or an older bird going to a second home. This is a stressful time for any bird, but you can help lessen the strife and make the move easier for both your new bird and the rest of the family.

Good planning ahead of time is essential.

A pet parrot should NEVER be an impulse buy. Adopting a companion parrot is just that - ADOPTING a new family member - they're not used cars to be traded in when you get bored! They are living, feeling, sensitive beings who should always be considered PERMANENT additions to the family.

I'll never forget the first local bird expo I went to after moving to the Northwest. It was winter - cold and rainy, and I saw a person after person exiting the expo, each with a tiny baby African Grey tucked under their coats. There was a vendor inside with lots of cute baby Grays and a cheap price - apparently, many folks couldn't resist. Since no one seemed to have brought a carrier, it didn't seem to me that these were "planned" purchases, but rather spur of the moment purchases.

I wonder how many went home to a nice cage, all set up with new toys and the proper diet? Not many, I'll bet. It's a deadly combo - cute, cheap, and baby! I'll bet not too many folks had done their homework either, studying up on African Greys and bird care in general.

The other common scenario is the "petshop rescue" - the pitiful bird at some pet store that knows nothing about birds - there he is, in a tiny cage, eating sunflower seeds, no toys, tucked in between the hamsters and the snakes, while the resident shop cat climbs freely through the store. So, on a whim, you take him home.

So, whether it's the irresistible baby, the sad ill cared for rescue, or an actual well thought out carefully chosen new addition - there he is, coming in your front door, hoping to spend the rest of his life with you, his ever loving devoted family!! So how do we transition from scared outsider to contented feathered child?

First, be prepared. Have the cage, toys, and food all set up prior to his arrival so he can slide right in and not have to stand by while everyone scrambles around, frantically searching for bird stuff. Normally, we advise putting a bird's cage in the busiest part of the house, where he can be the center of attention.

But new birds need some space, quiet and privacy during the settling in process, so find him a comfortable safe corner where he can observe, but at a distance. Of course, he should have made a trip to the vet first thing and quarantining him for at least one month away from any other birds is always recommended. So this may not be his permanent location, but rather serve as a "pit-stop" in the beginning. You may want to partially cover his cage, draping a towel over the back and one side to help him feel safe. If possible, have some of his previous diet to mix in with the new (wonderful) cuisine you'll be serving.

Find out as much as possible about, not only his diet, but preference in toys, play time, bed time, and daily routine. Keeping some consistency helps for a smoother transitional time. Radical changes don't agree with many parrots, so go slow. Introduce him to every family member, but avoid anyone doing too much "hands on" stuff in the beginning. Rather, spend time just sitting by him, talking to him and offering some treats by hand. Don't force him or expect instant love. Work on building trust with "step-ups". Play "The Towel Game" to have interactive fun, as well as aiding future needs for handling by a vet or groomer.

Put your new guy on a regular schedule. Feed him lots of fresh veggies and nice warm cooked grains and legumes. Warm food is "comfort food" and helps strengthen the bond when fed by hand. Share some family dinner with him, preferably on a stand by the dining table.

Watch TV together and preen his head feathers for him while you hang out on the couch. Include him in lots of family activities to help him feel a part of the flock. If everyone is gone to work or school during the day, leave a radio or TV on and make sure he's got plenty of interesting toys that provide both chewing exercise and mental stimulation. Talk to him before leaving, tell him he's okay and reassure him that you'll be back. When you do return give him a warm hello and a big hug. If you do have other birds, try to maintain the flock order. It won't help him relax if the other birds are resentful of all the attention the new guy gets.

Always address your primary bird first - first one out, first one kissed, first one fed, etc. Don't allow the birds to get together until you're sure everyone gets along. First time together, it's helpful if it's on a neutral new stand that no one is territorial about. If you expect the two to ultimately share a cage, remember that will take time and patience - you don't want the new guy intimidated by an overbearing dominant "resident" who thinks he runs the place.

An important point to remember - don't make the mistake of totally doting on the bird at first, then ignoring him after the novelty wears off. He'll definitely need extra attention in the beginning, but try to maintain a balance from the start, to avoid rebound problems down the road. So be prepared, go slow, build trust, and have fun getting to know each other. This is the beginning of a beautiful lifelong friendship.

In Fall 2003, America Online (AOL) released its brand new AOL Version 9. (Have you noticed all the TV ads?) AOL estimates that up to 50% of their users were using the new version by the end of December 2003.

The biggest new feature with AOL 9 is its aggressive method of reducing unsolicited e-mail (sp^m) for its users. Basically, AOL wants users to customize their own inboxes and view or receive only the messages that they choose.

While the crackdown is a noble endeavor, it puts legitimate e-mail publishers in the crossfire -- people like us who have worked hard to ensure that everyone on our list has opted-in and given us permission to contact them repeatedly.

To make sure that your AOL subscribers are receiving YOUR e-mails, here are a few things you should know.

All Your Graphics Are Blocked by Default

AOL has taken the drastic measure of blocking all graphics from being displayed in HTML e-mails, as well as deactivating the links for any new messages sent to an AOL 9 inbox. The system is also designed to "learn" what messages are repeatedly marked as sp^m, and they will eventually be sent to the junk folder automatically, once it maps the user's behavior.

When an e-mail is received in AOL 9, users have to click a link at the top of each message to view any graphics within your e-mail ("Show Images & Enable Links"). If this action is not taken, images (e.g. pictures, logos) and links will not be displayed or enabled.
Your Open Rates Are Likely Affected

If your e-mail publishing system uses "open tracking" to count how many people open your e-mails, you will start seeing lower numbers because the new AOL 9 also blocks open tracking tools by default. (Read on to learn how to improve your results.)
Ask Your Subs to Add You To Their Address Book

At the top of each issue you send, remind those AOL folks to put you in their AOL address book. For example, "AOL 9 users: Please add Alexandria@EzineQueen.com to your address book so you'll be sure to receive every issue of our e-zine".

Once a user puts you in her address book, all your future e-mails will automatically show images and functioning links. This will also allow the e-mail to be tracked properly as "opened" on your end.
Make Sure Your FROM Address is Consistent

This shouldn't be a problem unless your list server/e-mail publishing program generates a different FROM address with each e-mail you send. For example, today I got an issue of an e-zine with this FROM address: 16863-return-90-86968736@lb.bcentral.com. But when I looked at the LAST issue of the same e-zine two weeks ago, the return address had some different numbers in there.

This is BAD, because even if the AOL user adds you to her address book, every issue you send will be categorized as from a new sender. By having a consistent FROM address, you'll allow your AOL 9 subscribers to add your e-mail address into their address book, and all future e-mails you send will be easily received and tracked.

NOTE: There is a difference between your actual FROM address and what some call the "from LABEL". My e-zine's actual FROM address is Alexandria@EzineQueen.com, but it's labeled as from "E-zine Queen".

If you use Outlook or Eudora, you know what I mean. In your inbox list, you see all the from LABELS and not the actual e-mail addresses. For example, you see "John Smith" instead of jsmith2000@hotmail.com.

AOL does NOT show its users your from label, it only shows your true FROM address. You can usually access and change these settings in your e-mail publishing program. If you're not sure how to do this, talk with your vendor.
Bottom Line: Never Rely on Images to Convey Your Message

You can be sure that not all your AOL users will bother to put you in their address book, or understand how easy it is to do.

So here's the bottom line: Have fun with graphics and images in your HTML e-zine, but never rely on them to get your message across. Once each issue is complete and ready to send, look at it and pretend all the graphics are gone. Can your readers still instantly recognize it's a publication? Do they see it's from you? Is it obvious to them this is what they signed up for? If not, be sure to add text at the top to make things crystal clear.

I also recommend that if you don't have AOL yourself, get an account and put that e-mail address on your subscriber list. This will allow you to see how the new AOL 9 works and how your e-zine appears.

Being a small or home-based business owner can be loads of fun and very rewarding.

You may have decided to go into business because of your need for personal freedom or to fully unleash your creative genius. You may also have decided to go into business to supplement your existing income, to make yourself available for young children or aging parents, or because the organization you were working for downsized, leaving you to fend for yourself.

There are hundreds of different reasons why we become business owners, but the results we aim to produce remain the same ...

- You want to be your own person, doing something you love.

- You want to generate a profit that will provide you with the lifestyle you desire.

- You want to be recognized, respected and acknowledged for your contributions.

- You want to help others solve problems or fulfill needs.

- You want to make your own decisions instead of having them dictated to you.

- You want to pick and choose whom you work with and how you work.

- You want to experience freedom ... freedom to travel, enjoy quality time with family, set your own agenda, eat when you want, sleep when you want, etc.

Running your own small or home-based business can be immensely rewarding, yet if you get too involved with the routine daily matters and finer details of each task, you can get pulled into the vicious cycle of working "in" your business instead of "on" it.

When this happens, you become misguided and stop focusing on the tasks necessary to move your business forward at an optimal pace.

Whether you are a solopreneur or have a small team working for you, it is important that you don't allow yourself to get caught up in every fine detail of your business operations.

This doesn't mean that you shouldn't be aware of what is going around you, but simply means you only have so many hours in a day and how you spend your time will determine the rate your business grows, the profits you earn, the quality of service your clients and customers receive, and your overall happiness and personal satisfaction.

Are you the only person working your business at this time? If anything were to happen to you, for example, if you were to become sick and unable to work for a month, would your business operations come to a grinding halt and would your cash flow be brought to a standstill?

Do you arrange your own appointments, handle your own e-mail, do your own word processing, create your own marketing materials, keep your own financial records, manage your own web site, provide customer service and enter all prospect and client data into your database? Do you package, label and ship your own products?

If you answered yes to several of these questions, you may want to take some time to sit back and think about what these responsibilities are costing you, particularly if you are still working full-time while trying to get a business off the ground.

If you have been in business for several years and if you are still performing all functions within your business, how might this be holding you back? Are you working a 40-50-60-hour week, seeing little of your loved ones, feeling exhausted, and neglecting your health and nutritional needs? Is the fun no longer there?

Evaluate your current situation and determine whether you are running your business or whether it is running you. If you are being run by your business, consider the options of automating, delegating, bartering, leveraging and creating multiple streams of income.

When thinking long term, how do you see your business serving you? What kind of results do you want to create?

If your current activities are not moving you towards these results at an optimum pace, change your actions so you can free yourself up to do what is necessary to move you in that direction in the most advantageous way possible.

Smoking helps relaxation. Most smokers claim it helps them relax. But would you ever describe a smoker as relaxed ?

Their addiction (or habit) makes them nervous and jumpy. All things equal, a smoker will never relax as they once did before their drug.

Think about last time you ate in a restaurant. Isn't that a relaxing environment when you're eating your meal, in good company ? But that's not enough for the smoker. They're still not relaxed. They need a cigarette fix, even between courses, because they think that's what they need to relax.

In reality it's the habit, expectation and association with relaxing situations that are the main reasons he feels relaxed. Sometimes it's even the deep breathing effect that helps relaxation.

Any sportsperson knows that deep breathing helps relax before an event. Difference is he's breathing fresh air, rather than poison ! Smokers actually credit their cigarette for a temporary benefit they get from deep breathing.

Most day cares are non-profit organizations that must operate within a tight budget that covers the costs of facilities, staff and all of the equipment and materials for operating a quality and stimulating environment for children. It's a balancing act with little room for extras for the center or it's staff.

One way to offset the cost of extra curriculum, supplies or staff bonus programs is through fundraising. Our moms have successfully raised funds for our daycare centers, enabling them bring in additional music, art and science events, animal encounters, host special celebration days - like Hawaiian Luaus, purchase sun shades for the playground and fund the staff bonus pool.

Listed below are fundraising programs that have been successfully implemented that you can take, adapt and use at your center:

Garage Sales. Gather your family's extras and have a group garage sale to benefit your daycare center. Post signs at school to have other families bring their donations in a few weeks before the sale so you can have time to price and organize the items.

Auction. Have an informal auction of donated goods and services in your daycare's lobby with write-in bids. You can also help organize an auction event, complete with tickets that must be purchased to attend. The event usually has catering, a bar, entertainment and live auction and those costs must be factored into the budget.

Donations. Ask the merchants your frequent regularly if they have goods or services they can donate to the center. Describe the center, what you are raising funds for and explain the donation is tax deductible. Many requests will be positively received. We have found that we've received the best response when collecting donations in the spring, summer and early fall so we're not competing with other donation requests around the holidays. These donations are then incorporated into the school auctions.

Open Ebay Store. Large scale auction events are really only practical one or two times a year for daycare centers because of the costs involved. Consider having a committee that solicits donations year long and sells them in an open market, such as Ebay. It expands your fundraising circle from the immediate circle to a global reach.

Matching Gifts. Remind parents that many corporations have matching gifts programs for donations to non-profit organizations and daycare centers usually qualify. Under this benefit, the corporation may match your cash donation by 50 to 100%.

Artwork By Children. Work with the classroom teachers to create artwork that can be displayed a gallery and sold to parents. Creative projects made by the children or that feature a child's picture make wonderful gifts for family and friends and sell well when priced appropriately.

memorize their children by purchasing an engraved plaque for a wall, a stamped brick for a walkway or a large piece of equipment for the playground. Interning is about more than earning money during summer break. It's a wonderful way to gain work experience and lay the foundation for your future career. But to get the most out of it, you have to do more than just land the job, show up for work and collect your paycheck. Here are some tips that will help you get the full benefits of interning:

1. Pay Attention. This is more than a job, it's a learning experience. And unlike school, this is the real world -- where you'll be spending the rest of your life after graduation! Your coworkers know you are new to this and will want to help you, but they can't spend all day explaining things to you. So when they answer your questions or show you how to do something, pay attention. Also pay attention to what's going on around you. How do your coworkers talk to each other? How do they treat the boss? What are their goals and concerns? Learn the culture and customs of the work world.

2. Find a Mentor. Whether it's your supervisor or someone else you work with, find a person who is willing to answer your questions and help you learn. Ask about the job, the company, the career field. Find out what they did to advance in their career, and what advice they have for you. Establish a strong relationship. This person may be able to help you with your career long after you leave this intern job. But be fair and make this a two-way partnership that benefits you both. Don't just take, give. Offer to help your mentor with special projects or other activities that may not be specifically part of your duties. Make yourself as valuable to him/her as your mentor is to you.

3. Accept Reality. You may get stuck with some work that you feel is beneath you, boring, or just plain pointless. You will probably not be included in the important decisions going on around you. But you are, after all, just an intern. The trick is to make the best of it by doing an outstanding job with every task you're assigned. Then ask for more. Take on anything you can and show that you can be counted upon to get it done quickly and accurately. Even if it's something dull like filing paperwork, your efforts will be recognized, appreciated and remembered.

4. Be Professional. Remember, you are in a work setting now and need to act professionally. Don't show up late, chat on your cell phone, take extra-long breaks or bring your personal life to work with you.

5. Evaluate Your Career Goals. One of the best things you can learn from your internship is whether you're pursuing the career path that's right for you. Are you enjoying the work? Is it what you expected? Can you picture yourself doing the same kind of work and being happy with it for the rest of your career? If not, you should re-evaluate your career goals.

Whether you operate a chain of restaurants, a mom-and-pop convenience store, or a medium-sized retail shop, you are in business to make money. Their body's nutritional reserves are consumed in that battle and they are less able to defend themselves from the pollutants they encounter during their day. Asthma and allergies are not produced by a single irritant, but by an accumulation of minor irritants that eventually overwhelm the body's ability to adapt. It is not a huge leap to imagine that removing a respiratory irritant from the sleeping environment, where a person spends one third of their time, is going to produce an improvement in a child's ability to breathe.

There are a variety of reasons for this. Some are concerned because of a fear of hitting the ball in a "bad" place- into a hazard, bunker, OB, etc. Others

don't swing the club with full commitment because of a lack of faith in their ability to swing it well, and instead end up trying to guide the ball.

The trouble with making tentative swings is that regularly the shot ends up creating a poor result. Here is how the best players in the world handle this problem.

There are basically two ways to approach a shot, each with two basic results. A swing can either be committed or uncommitted, and the result of any swing can have a positive result or a negative result.

1. Commitment with Positive Result--------------2. Commitment with Negative Result

3. Lack of Commitment with Positive Result------4. Lack of Commitment with Negative Result

Situation 4 is the absolute worst feeling in golf. Swinging the club or executing a putt tentatively and/or without commitment and getting a poor result is a double whammy. Here the player is trying to protect against a feared consequence, hasn't really given himself a chance for something good to happen, and had the feared outcome happen anyway. This scenario scores a direct hit on the confidence because of the lack of courage and the poor result.

Situation 3 is only slightly better. In this instance, the player doesn't really "go after it", but gets a positive result anyway. Most golfers in their heart of hearts know when they've "gotten away with one" as opposed to when they've actually "gone after it". Most players don't feel very good even when they have hit a timid shot or made an unsure putt and had the ball go where they were hoping. Essentially, this feels good in the moment, but it has a negative impact on most players' confidence.

For the most part a lack of commitment, irrespective of result, sets up situations that ultimately hurt a player's confidence.

On the other hand, commitment inescapably does the opposite.

Situation 2, where a player makes a fully committed swing or putt and doesn't get the result he'd like, creates mild disappointment. While this is true, competitive golfers know that they've at least given themselves a chance for something good to happen, and have done what they could to create a positive golf shot. Most live well with this, knowing that over time these types of swings and putts will produce the rewards they seek. This is a net positive to the confidence. Situation 1 is the best feeling in golf. It is the situation where one makes a fully dedicated pass at the ball and gets exactly what one was looking for. These are the moments which generate - even for the casual golfer- the kind of internal response that connect with one's love of the game. Getting a positive result in a situation where a challenge was confronted head on is high on the list of confidence boosters.

Confidence can be built one shot at a time if swings and putts are made with steadfast commitment!

Brilliant mental math short cuts that will amaze everyone!

Do you believe that the best way to deal with procrastination is to "get tough" with yourself and "just do it?" Many people take this approach. What's behind it is the sense that procrastination is essentially a character flaw, a weakness, and that the only way to deal with it is to muscle past it through sheer will. But the truth is, there's a more effective way to approach it that also happens to be much more self- respectful.

Essentially, the idea is to identify what's MOTIVATING the procrastination behavior, consider it valid, and then address THAT. For example, you may be putting off doing something because you actually don't know how to do it. The way to solve that would be to get some help. Or, perhaps you're avoiding making a particular phone call because you are afraid of the outcome. One way to address the fear is to schedule a call with someone you trust before and after the fear-inducing call, in order to have support before and after the difficult encounter.

Get the idea? Give up the character flaw idea, and look for what's really underlying the procrastination. Once you know what that is, you can usually figure out a way to deal with it, get unstuck, and get moving again.

What follows are real life examples of how two of my clients solved the problems underlying their procrastination:

PROCRASTINATION: I'm not writing the letter.
PROBLEM: I want the letter to be brilliant and creative but don't feel brilliant and creative about it.
SOLUTION: "I realized it was more important for the letter to be OUT than to be brilliant. Once I decided I could write a less-than-spectacular letter, it became much easier to just sit down and do it."
CONCEPT: Don't get it right, get it written. "Expedient" is not a dirty word. Sometimes, it serves you better to have the B+ letter out in the world already, being read, than to have the A+ letter still sitting in your word processor, unfinished, and nagging at you.

PROCRASTINATION: I'm not unpacking the boxes in my new office.
PROBLEM: Boring!!
SOLUTION: "I hired my [young] daughter to unpack the boxes, shelve the books (I had to tell her where), and dismantle the boxes. She was happy to do the work and earn a little money, and she thought it was cool to help me. I was happy because we got to spend that time together AND . . . the job got done."
CONCEPT: Delegate! If a task seems boring, it's often a good clue that this is a job to delegate. You may need to supervise or train someone to do it, but there is likely to be someone for whom the job would be a plus. Find that person and work out a deal. Delegation arrangements can be paid or bartered in infinite creative ways. Don't be stopped by failure of the imagination.

Here are the steps that you can take when tackling a procrastination. Please note that each step is important. Don't under-respect any of the steps just because you think you already know how to do them. And don't underestimate how long it may take you to master some of these steps. Some people, for example, find it takes a very long time to learn how to stop judging themselves.

Recognize when you are procrastinating.
Notice if you are judging yourself for procrastinating.
If you are judging yourself, stop. If you're not judging yourself, acknowledge yourself for that.
Identify what's motivating the procrastination.
Solve the problem that's underlying (motivating) the procrastination.
Take the action that you no longer need to procrastinate.
Say this to yourself: "Well done!"

Against Lake Superior; -- And trees of stone.

At the hour,--Midnight, [His shadow aglow]: links Land, Lake an' road- He sees his foe...

In the Wild November, l988

It is the hour before midnight, on the harsh, gray flat asphalt road along the banks of one of the Great Lakes [Superior]. A truck races by like a shadow, the moon glowing behind a small house. The car swiftly goes on by, the dim light from the fogy night: --moon penetrating through the fog onto the tuck and house, where a man is standing by the road; -- music is heard coming from the car, Rock & Roll, as this stranger standing by the road, a man in a red plaid shirt, he stands erect, as if he was Paul Bunion; standing in-between the road and the house as a truck races by.

Now, it is an hour past midnight, and the soupy sky is blocking more of the light from the moon, yet still bright amounts of light seep through from the moons light, spiritedly, making clear the man figure intermittently, but not too clear, not his face in particular [you never see his face clearly, yet you know he is handsome], only his height is quite obvious; -- his broad and thick shoulders are noticeable, his solid stance is terrorizing if not magnetic. Still standing between the lake, house and road, the music is no longer heard, only the sounds from the waves of the Great Lakes are audible, slapping against the bank. The big man doesn't turn, or move a muscle. Now the truck again, the very same one that went by before is going by again, but this time slowly. It is an l952-Ford truck, green.

A huge rat runs across the street, in-between the wheels of the car, it is hit, and squeals, cries with pain, someone in the front seat, passenger side looks back to see what it was that they hit. The rat stares at the looker, his eyes dark, almost humanistic, a reflection of his dark eyes, it seems to penetrate the back window, as if the eyeball it self of the rat, sticks into the glass. The rat's back is crushed, and he is pulling himself off the road with his front limbs. The Ford-truck is a spotless and clean truck, that is, it was before the rat put his blood on its wheels.

The dark figure standing, staring by the street, is noticed by the two men in the front seat of the truck, they stare but keep going, --trees blowing to his right and left, the waves of the Great Lake of Superior, makes a humming sound, and everything else, as if you were in the middle of a hurricane, the stranger stands erect yet, never moving. He sees the eyes of the passenger in the Ford-truck, a small figure, a man of about forty, the driver calls him Skip, and he hears that. The taller man at the wheel, his arms are solid, and frozen to the wheel, is called Amery, for some reason you know he knows that.

Skip: "Yes, yes, I saw him! D' did you? He was by the trees, or was it in front of the house...? No, by the road; gee, maybe it was both, he seemed to be in both locations at once. A shadow effect I suppose." [He talks with unsteadiness].

The moon is almost covered now with the fog and darkness of the sky, and night has completely taken over the north area of Minnesota. The birds in the trees, and there are only a few, can be heard, most have gone south as there is a little snow here and there, the fall leaves are all over with their many colors; the rat now across the street is dying, and reeking with sounds of pain. You can hear him twisting about in the leaves. A deer in the woods is awaken and runs deeper into the wooded area; as if nature was about to have an abruption; birth pains. The few birds leave the branches; they also know something is wrong.

Amery: "You'd think that man, that man, the one by the house back south [he doesn't finish his thinking]."

He stutters a bit and is silent as his truck slows down to ten miles per hour. Amery hands a knife to Skip, who puts it next to his groin area. The car stops, they both are thinking, looking at one another, their eyes are not blinking, you can see the hairs of their eyebrows as if the eye is attached to it, the lower lip of the eyelid is almost stuck to the eyebrow from staring, --they're listening to the waves, for that is the only sound now that is optional, except the humming of the truck motor, the waves of the of the Great Lake Superior seem to be upon them [Amery is thinking out loud, talking to himself &I'd don't like it, get out of here'].

Skip sees the thickness of the woods next to him, as the head lights reflect the fog-lit moon shadows. In front of him there are hundreds of frogs crossing the road, driftwood had reached all the with way from the lake up to the road, --it is strange they both think [but say very little, talking seems to stress them now], and so they now are thinking more with their body expressions, their face, eyebrows, the way they look at each other; --they turn their head sharp as if they sense Lake Superior is right next to them because of the sounds of the waves are becoming louder again, but they know it is a few hundred yards to the side of them, yet all this driftwood laying about, they seem to be fixed on for the moment, as if they were on a levy.

Amery puts the weight of his head on his hand as if to support it, --not sure of what to do next, and then he puts his hand flat on top of his head: -- as if he is fed up with it all. Skip gives a head shake as if to say no, but says nothing. He turns his head from side to side. Then out of no where he puts his hand along side of his face as if to slap it, giving stupid me looks!

Skip: "That house, for some reason I'm interested in that house, as if I don't have enough mystery in my life, and that man, and d'do-oo, you-u-u think we should go back and ..." he leaves it an open statement-question, instead of a question.

"M-m-m-m," said Amery [with a query looking face as if to request for clarity], his cunning looking eyes staring at the frogs. Adding, "We can circle around and go back South to the stranger's house, if that is what you want, I like the house idea for some reason, it just... [he puts his fingers both hands on his forehead simultaneously, one above each eye, and puts pressure on them as if to say, this is crazy], it's just bothering for some reason, the house, that man;" --he kind of feels at this point, maybe this is an unlucky thing to do, as if there might be no escape once done, and so is unclear with his mood; &foolish of me to think like that,' he tells himself. Skip does not say a word but with the tips of his finger and thumb in the center of his forehead he pinches himself to see if he is crazy himself or alive, "Weird..." he mumbles.

[Back to the House] ◙

Slowly they drive a little further up the road, find an area along the road side, they can turn around the truck; --cliffs being on one side and an embankment on the other that lead down to the lake itself. As they make their turn, they straighten out the wheel, press hard on the gas and get the hell going to the strangers house.

As they drive Southbound to find the house, innately Amery's solid arms are becoming tighter, along with his hands on the wheel, his face showing stress, eyebrows were rapidly being raised and lowered as if to say &no', being annoyed with himself and Skip for turning the truck around. His whole body is becoming agitated.

Skip: "You need a drink, Amery? Pull yourself together; you look like you're under some acute anxiety attack." Pulling a bottle of wine from under his seat, he opens the bottle and drinks a good drink from it, right out of the spout, then hands it to Amery.

Along the roadside you can see the shades of dark-green and black shadows along the grass, and the crossing of shadows along the forwarding black asphalt road, as the Ford-truck glides along.

The car now becomes more manageable, as Amery takes a second swallow from the wine bottle. His body is starting to loosen up. He pulls on his eye somewhat, as if he is more alert, or is trying to be.

Skip: "See? That is all you needed." Skip has small glasses on, like Ben Franklin, as he speaks he looks over the top of his glasses at Amery. He notices Amery is more settled, and therefore, allows himself to lean back more into his seat.

"We should be getting closer to the house, slow the car down," says Skip.

Amery: "You mean truck."

Skip: "Whatever, -- but slow it down...!"

He now takes a look about the area, it is not the house, it is the top of tress by the lake; --the shadows are forming the likes of a house. As he catches his breath, they continue forward.

Everything is quiet outside of the car now, yet some Rock and Roll music can still be heard from within the car, but it is real low.

Again they slow down, then stop, look about, they hear the water slapping the bank from the Great Lake again, but can not see it. The breeze from the lake is picking up, as the window is rolled down they can feel the breeze, there is a chill to it, so they roll it up a bit more. Trees are swaying.

Amery: "I can't see a damn thing out there, and it's getting cold...!"

Skip shakes his head [as if to say, I got to do everything] and opens the door to see where they are at [in particular, if the house is visible, he does not want to pass it up so he looks in both directions, north and south, as the steps out completely of he truck; --he steps on several frogs, "...god...birchen frogs every place!" He jumps back into his truck.

"Damn things are all around; I hate swarms of things like that." Amery simply looks at Skip, not saying a word, a flat affect.

Skip and Amery start to make funny faces as a putrid smell fills their nostrils.

Amery: "What on gods-earth is that stink...?"

Skip: "Not sure, --maybe a skunk, dead frogs, the water smells sometimes; maybe shit, who knows up here, could be a combination ... [he hesitates] let's shut our windows." As another mile goes by it starts to get a little foggy looking out the window, shadows seem to be everywhere.

Amery raises his head, he sees the house, and pulls the truck over to the side of the road. The house is across the street, now to their left, or East. The big man, the stranger with the red-plaid-flannel looking shirt, is standing by his porch; --just standing there. Skip rolls down the window, gets a bit of fresh air, and notices the frogs are gone.

Skip: "Hay Amery, the fucken frogs are gone, gone, gone."

Amery: "I just got thinking, what are we doing back here, this is the third time."

Skip: "What do you mean?" Skip stops to think what Amery said, "Yaw, your right, the first one was by necessity, the second by curiosity, and the third, oh well, maybe by something symbolic, that man, yaw, that man, we need a good fresh mystery in our life's like we need a hole in the head, but we're here none the less. I suppose no real reason to this otherwise; --can't think of one anyways."

Skip looks over Amery's shoulder out his window, toward the house, he is somewhat leaning on the steering wheel.

Amery: "He's just standing by the porch."

Skip: "Yaw, I can see that, let me yell at him: --&Hay stupid, yaw you, what you doing!"' Amery looks at Skip as if that might not be the smartest thing to do.

Skip: "Something on your mind, Amery."

Amery: "I would like to go, get rid of this cargo, and have breakfast."

In the back of the truck is a gunny-sack, the sound of a sack is rolling back and forth, it sounds like a sack of potatoes. "Let's pass this up Skip, I don't necessary like this."

Skip: "Morning will not be for a few more hours, we got time to fool around, and then get back to business."

Very quickly Skip opens the truck door, steps down from the truck onto the side of the road. There is still a chill in the air; he coughs, buttons his sweater up a bit, tries to focus his little eyes, adjusts his glasses on his nose. He is about 5'4" inches tall, about 160 pounds, so he is having a hard time seeing over the hood of the car, he starts to walk to the front of the car. Spying about, trying to see in the forest, he hears something, a squeak, looks down, and there is that rat, a big, big rat, the size of a twenty pound dog; --the rat is a foot from him, and with what strength he has left, bites through Skip's pants taking a good gash out of him. Skip falls back, than turning 45-degrees, he jumps up on the side of the truck, almost backwards into the truck. You can't make out what he is saying but he is yelling and swearing, and as he feels his leg, blood is bucketing out like a boxer who just got his nose broken, and split open. He pulls out a scarf from under the back of his seat of the truck, and ties it lightly around his leg.

Skip: "I'm bit, the rat, that fucken rat, was trying to kill me..." Amery backs the truck up, then goes forward running the rat over, but now is stuck in the side of the road in a hole, his front right wheel in mud with a little ice.

Amery: "I told you Skip, this was not good, and we should go."

Skip: "I got to get to a hospital."

Amery: "What about the cargo?"

Skip: "Get the gun, go in that damn house and kill that sun-of a bitch-en stranger and we can bury the body there, and get a doctor out here"

Amery: "I don't think it's going to be that easy." Amery then pulls a gun out of the glove-compartment, a Three-fifty-Seven revolver. He checks to see if it is loaded, knowing it should be, and it is. Putting it in his right jacket pocket, he grabs the wine and gives it to Skip to drink. Skip drinks half the bottle down, leaving only one forth left. He is drunk now.

Amery: "I hear another car coming, funny isn't it; way up here in no mans land." He hesitates, looks at Skip, "Maybe we can go to that light house, you know, the one we saw one the way up here, I'm not sure, but it's about a hundred, or is it fifty miles from here." Then he looks around, "Where is that car...must be hearing things also."

Skip: "It's too far, why not here."

Amery: "This guy is more creeper then you and I are. That's why."

Skip: "Now listen [Amery being with a lack of credulity], we don't need to be put off by this guy, we just kill him like we were going to do with the girl ... you know, girl in the gunny-sack in the back of the truck. The one we rapped, and rapped, and she tried to get away, so we cut her hands off, feet off so she couldn't, and we rapped her again. She's most likely dead by now."

Amery: "I hear a boat whistle, and I heard that gunny-sack rolling back and forth before, when the truck was stopped, she's still alive."

Skip: "This is the Great Lakes, what do you expect, ships go back and forth all the time. You've lived too long in North Dakota. But if we do not get me a shot to counter this rat poison, I'm going to die; this fucken rat most likely has rabies, disease, everything under the sun. I don't want to die like this, not with a rat bite."

You can get a pretty good bargain on borders in the closeout bin at your wallpaper store or home improvement center, but make sure they have enough of the border to go around the area you want to cover as these bargains are usually close outs and you might not be able to get more!

Since most wallpapers come pre-pasted, applying the border is easy. A backsplash area is usually pretty small so this project can be done in an afternnon. When selecting your border, think about your overall theme or color scheme of the kitchen. You want to pick something that complements it and, of course, pick one that is washable so that you can easily remove all the "splashes" that occur during normal kitchen activities.

To prepare your wall area for the wallpaper border, clean the wall thoroughly first. You can just wash them with soap and water but make sure you get any gunk or grease spots off. If there are any big holes in the plaster, you might want to patch them, but little holes are OK and the border will cover them up nice! Remove the coverings to any light switches or electrical outlets.

Measure out your wall paper so it is a couple of inches longer that the actual size of the backsplash and cut. Apply the paper to the wall per the manufactuers instructions. If your paper has a pattern, make sure you match the pattern on the cut edges in corners or where you couldn't use the continuous roll. Butt the bottom of the border up against your counter. If there are any windows or moldings in the area you are papering, you will want to overlap any paper that is against them. Make sure you smooth the paper out with a wet sponge or wallpaper brush to remove any bubbles and wrinkles. After putting the border up, take a wet sponge and smooth it out to the edge - always move the sponge from the paper to the wall so that the edge doesn't buckle up. Make sure the edges have enough paste on them so that they don't peel back after it is dry.

Cut off excess paper around any moldings, window and in the electrical outlets and switches.
